Problem Statement

This project addresses the Claytor Lake shoreline of a cattle and horse farm in Pulaski County. Approximately four miles of the farm’s shoreline has eroded due to the energy of the water hitting the banks. This project focuses on two specific sites, each including 500 feet of shoreline.

The first, referred to as the Dublin Hollow site, is located in an area of the lake that is popular for recreational activities, such as wakeboarding. The other, called the Dam site due to its view of the Appalachian Power Dam, is a cove that focuses waves coming off the rest of the lake. In this area, erosion is primarily caused by wind-driven waves coming from the main portion of the lake.

Different issues need to be addressed with each shoreline: the Dublin Hollow site has significantly higher banks, up to 10 feet in places, while the Dam site has banks that do not exceed 5 feet in height but have significant undercutting, measured up to 3 feet horizontally. These site conditions will likely need to be addressed in different ways. We will develop a solution designed to reduce the erosion of these shorelines while also enhancing the endangered mussels’ habitat.
